Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS)

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS)

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)

  • Also known as Lou Gehrig’s, is a degenerative motor neuron disease. It causes generalized muscle weakness, slurred speech, difficulty swallowing, muscle cramps, balance impairment, and spasticity.
  • Symptoms include slurred speech, muscle cramps, difficulty maintaining posture, and spasticity. There is no known cure. However, Ginsburg Neurology is proud to work with the ALS of Nevada. Together, we hold a monthly multidisciplinary clinic for ALS patients in order to consolidate their care.

Brain disorders

Stroke

  • A stroke occurs when the brain is not receiving proper blood supply, or due to hemorrhage. There are many risk factors that can lead to strokes, which require management in conjunction with a physician.

Spasticity

  • Damage to the nerve pathways within the brain or spinal cord that controls muscle movement causes a condition called Spasticity. Spasticity causes muscle stiffness and impairs movement. It can be a symptom associated with various neurological disorders such as multiple sclerosis or strokes.
  • While there is no cure for spasticity, it is possible to improve quality of life through a broad range of treatments that include botulinum toxin, muscle relaxants, and physical therapy.

Epilepsy

  • This condition can be a result of stroke, genetic disorder, infection, or brain trauma. EEG is a valuable tool in evaluating epilepsy. There are a variety of treatments for patients with epilepsy, including medication, surgery, and newer advanced procedures.

Dementia & Memory LosS

Dementia

  • A broad medical term to describe progressive cognitive and behavioral impairment.  There are many types of dementia such as Alzheimer’s disease, frontotemporal, or Parkinson’s disease related dementia.

Support & Care

  • Memory disorders can impact one's life, for both you and your family. Ginsburg Neurology can provide compassionate care to help navigate the complexity of Dementia or other such memory loss for both you and your family.

Dystonia

Dystonia

  •  A movement disorder that causes involuntary muscle contractions. The condition can range from mild to severe, causing cramps and abnormal posture in one or more parts of the body. Dystonia can be caused by a variety of conditions, and are often treated with injections with botulinum toxins.

FOLLOW-UP care

Treatment Management

  • Some neurological conditions may require consistent and ongoing care. Ginsburg Neurology can help you regain control through a proper treatment plan.

Help Manage Quality Of Life

  • Scheduling follow-up appointments with your neurologist is the best start to managing your symptoms or conditions.

Headaches & Migraines

Migraines

  •  Migraines are typically lateralized severe headaches that can feel intense, throbbing or pulsating. Sufferers often become greatly sensitive to external stimulation such as light or sounds. Triggers can vary, and can be inconsistent.

Treatment

  • It is important to receive proper diagnosis and treatment for migraines. Ginsburg Neurology will address the individual patient based on consistent clinical history. Once proper diagnosis is derived, treatment will range from reduction of acute pain to preventative, such as identifying triggers.

Myasthenia Gravis

Myasthenia Gravis

  • A chronic autoimmune disorder that can cause fluctuating degrees of weakness. The weakness can affect vision, chewing or swallowing, breathing, and muscles in the limbs. Antibodies destroy the receptor sites of the neuromuscular junction, which cause the weakness.
  • While there is no cure for Myasthenia Gravis, there are a variety of treatment options that help mitigate the symptoms.

MYOPATHY

Myopathy (Muscle Disorders)

  •  Diseases that affect muscle fibers fall under the general term of Myopathies. Such diseases cause weakness in the skeletal muscles. These disorders can be inherited or acquired and can be treated with specialized medication and therapy.
  • Myopathies can be diagnosed through blood tests, Electromyography (EMG), and muscle biopsies.

Neuropathy

Peripheral Neuropathy

  • Peripheral neuropathy refers to nerve damage in the arms and legs. This type of damage can cause numbness, tingling, and pain. It can be symmetric or focal. Specific examples of focal nerve entrapment include ulnar and peroneal neuropathy. Nerve conduction studies and electromyography (EMG) are instrumental in confirming neuropathy.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

  • Carpal tunnel syndrome is the most common form of focal nerve entrapment, and affects the median nerve in the wrist. It can affect coordination and use, while causing pain, numbness, or weakness throughout the hand. Left untreated, this can make simple tasks difficult and cause further compression of the areas nerves.
